Clearing Blocked Drain

1,253

We are giving you a handy guide to help you unblock your drain.

Before You Start

Failure of bathroom and WCs to drain rapidly and efficiently and overflowing inspection chamber of gully are the signs of a blocked drain. If that happens, you will have to use rods to clear the drain. Always wear gloves for your protection while you work.

Tools:
• Drain rods altered with a 100mm diameter rubber plunger,
• Couple of long rubber gloves,
• Powerful garden spade,
• Hose,
• Disinfectant,
• Watering can.

1. Find the blockage
Check the chamber that is closest to the main drain, then a septic tank and at the end the gully.

The blockage is in the drain between the chamber and the higher one or the gully if the chamber is empty. If the chamber closest to the main drain is full, the stoppage is somewhere between it and the main drain. And at the end, if the drain guides you to a septic tank, or the last chamber is full you should empty the tank.

2. Clearing the blockage
If you want to clear the stoppage in the main drain system, you have to insert the rod fitted with the plunger into a chamber at one end of the stopped department. You can see where the mouth of the pipe is if the chamber is empty but if you want to work from the full chamber, you will have to probe with the plunger until you discover the mouth.

3. Adding more Rods
To work the plunger efficiently to the blockage, add more rods. And watch out to turn the rods clockwise, because if you do differently, it may happen to leave him in the drain and make even larger problems. Just keep pushing it against the obstruction and then pull the plunger a little way.

4. Wet Jet
Directing a strong stream of water down the drain from a hosepipe completes the clearance.

5. Clearing Up
Hose down the rods and gloves entirely and wash them with diluted disinfectant poured from a can full of water.

Interceptor Chambers

When you want to clear a stoppage between an interceptor chamber and main drain, just insert the rods through the rodding eye. The drain at this chamber drops through a U-trap something like one in a gully.

To prevent waste from the major drain entering you house drains, there is a trap that also prevents you from pushing rods through. Over the mouth of the trap stands a short projection of pipe with a plug in it. When you find it and pull out the plug, you will be able to insert the drain rods through the hole.

When the chamber and trap are cleared, you can hose them down entirely to be sure that waste can come out.

Testing Drains

You can check with the environmental health department to test the drains if they are not blocked, and you suspect there is a leak somewhere because of the wet ground or persistent nasty smell.
